I have decided to do a unit plan on the book Brown Girl Dreaming. Along with the reading of the book I have some activities planned throughout the course of the month-long unit lesson. Below is a rough draft of how I plan to teach this text and activities that correlate to the pages read. This draft is not set in stone and will more than likely change as the planning process progresses in the weeks ahead.
Week 1: Anticipatory set~ students learn about the Jim Crow laws, The Civil Rights Movement, and essential elements of poetry. Students will begin reading part one on Thursday.
Week 2: Finish reading parts 1 & 2 and start on part 3.
* Introduce and talk more about the sit-ins that took place during this time. I would show images and short texts online about how the sit-ins worked.
*Also begin a family poetry project or have the students begin writing their own memoir.
Week 3: Finish reading part 3 by Wednesday and start part 4. The rest of the week will be spent learning about the Black Power Movement and possibly Angela Davis.
Week 4: Finish part 4 on Monday and begin reading part 5. Finish part 5 on Thursday and watch either The Help or Remember the Titans. This week is also when project presentations begin.
